Between visits
Good advice is worth more than a sales pitch. In this section we explain how doors and openers work, what wears out and why, and how to tell a small job from a big one.

Repair & Maintenance
What is the balance test and why does it matter?
With the opener disconnected, the door is lifted by hand. If it moves with light effort and stays put at waist height, the springs are carrying its weight as designed. If it drifts up, sinks or feels heavy, the springs are out of step with the door and the opener has been doing the lifting. That strain shortens the opener's life and can defeat its reversal settings, which is why balance is checked first. Garage Door Safety Inspection
My door closes, then reopens on its own. Is that a tune-up job?
Often, yes. A door that reverses before reaching the floor usually reacts to one of three things: photo-eyes misaligned or dirty, a down travel limit set so the door meets the floor before the opener expects it, or a force setting so low that stiff hinges, debris or a roller out of true read as an obstruction, since a clean, dry track is what the door is meant to run on. A tune-up clears all three by aligning the sensors, resetting the limits and freeing up the door's movement. Garage Door Tune-Up
My door has springs along the sides, not above it. Is the reset the same?
The principle is the same but the sequence differs. With side springs the door is first opened all the way and clamped, because that is the position where the springs carry no load; the cables are then checked over their pulleys and evened up at the clips. The technician also checks that a containment cable runs through each spring, which stops a broken spring flying across the garage, and fits one if it is missing. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How do I know whether the damage is only cosmetic?
Watch the door move. A cosmetic dent leaves the section flat at the joints, the door travelling without a catch, and the hinges and rollers seated normally. Signs that the damage goes further include a crease that reaches a joint or stile, a hinge screw that has pulled out, a roller sitting crooked in the track, a gap of daylight at a joint, or a shudder as that section reaches the track curve. Any of those calls for a proper assessment. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
How long do garage door rollers last?
It depends on what they are made of and how often the door moves. Builder-grade plastic wheels with no bearings often show wear after only a few years. Steel and nylon rollers with seven to thirteen ball bearings are typically rated for ten to fifteen thousand cycles, roughly the life of a torsion spring, which for many households means seven to ten years. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers are rated far higher. A door used many times a day, or one living with salt and slush, shortens all of those. Garage Door Roller Replacement
What gauge of hinge does my door need?
Gauge runs backwards: a larger number means thinner steel. Light single doors often come with 18-gauge hinges, 14-gauge is the heavier standard for most residential doors, and 11-gauge is commercial stock. A heavy insulated double door, a door used many times a day, or a door whose hinges keep cracking benefits from the thicker option. The technician matches or improves on what was fitted, provided the width and hole pattern suit the stiles. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Can a bent garage door track be straightened, or does it need replacing?
Both happen, and the damage decides. A shallow dent in the vertical run away from the curve is usually dressed back to shape with track pliers or a block, and a channel that has spread can be squeezed closed. A kink, a crack, a bend in the curved piece or steel thinned by rust is replaced with a matching section, because a hard spot in the roller path keeps catching however carefully it is worked. Should both cables be replaced when only one has failed?
Yes, as a rule. The two cables were fitted together, have flexed around their drums the same number of times and have sat in the same slush, so the survivor is close to the end of its life. A new cable beside a stretched one also makes it harder to set the door level. Two matched cables give an even lift and one visit instead of two. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
What should I check before calling?
Look for the simple things: is the opener plugged in and its light working, has the wall control's lock indicator started blinking, does another remote work, is anything sitting in the path of the sensors, and are the little sensor lights steady. Note what the motor does when you press a button. Do not try to lift a door that is stuck if a spring looks broken. Whatever you find, tell the technician; it shortens the diagnosis. What does the sprocket do, and how does it wear?
The sprocket is the toothed wheel on top of the motor head that pulls the chain. Every cycle drags the chain over its teeth, and over years the teeth wear thin and hooked, letting the chain ride up and skip under load, often at the same point on the rail each time. A sprocket that has loosened on its shaft lags behind the motor. Worn sprockets are replaced as part of the gear and sprocket assembly. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
How long should a belt last once repaired?
A belt's life is counted in cycles and years, and on a balanced door with the rail straight and the tension right it runs for many years. What shortens it is a heavy door, an over-tight adjustment, a bent rail rubbing one edge, or grease on the rubber. Keep the door balanced and lubricated, the belt dry, and glance along the rail a few times a year. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
How should I prepare the garage before the visit?
Move vehicles out onto the driveway, bring any car that needs its built-in buttons programmed, and clear the floor under the door's path and the area beneath the old opener and rail so ladders can stand safely. Take bikes and boxes off shelves that hang near the ceiling line. Know where the electrical panel is, and have the phones that will use the app on hand with your Wi-Fi password. Installation & Upgrades
How is the correct spring system selected?
Counterbalance parts are chosen from the new door's actual size, completed weight, track arrangement and hardware configuration, using the door system's specifications. Torsion and extension layouts use different components and space. Once installed, controlled adjustment and manual balance checks confirm how the spring system supports the door through its travel. Can I keep the garage door opener I already have?
Possibly, after its identity, condition and compatibility are checked against the new door. The installer reviews door height and weight, track layout, reinforcement, attachment geometry, travel limits, controls and safety sensors. The door is balanced and operated manually before any opener is connected. If the existing unit fits the documented requirements, it can be integrated and tested as part of the installation scope. Can a wind-rated door include windows?
Yes, when glazing is part of the selected configuration. Window size, position, retainers, and the surrounding section construction may affect the reinforcement layout, so the desired design is chosen before ordering. Factory-prepared glazed sections keep appearance, strength, sealing, and documentation aligned rather than turning windows into an alteration after installation. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What happens if the garage floor is not level?
The survey measures the variation and determines how the bottom section and seal can meet it. A flexible astragal can accommodate modest changes, while a pronounced crown, dip or damaged threshold may call for related floor or threshold work. The door itself is installed level for reliable travel; the sealing approach is selected separately to follow the practical shape of the floor. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
